Disease Control and Prevention

Disease Reporting & Investigation

Epidemiology and Health Information monitors the incidence and distribution of communicable, environmental, occupational and other dangerous diseases occurrences in the county’s populations, as well as factors determining that distribution. Through epidemiological assessment and timely response to these adverse events of diseases, it provides assurance of quality health service to the community.

The main functions of Epidemiology and Health Information Division are:

  • Maintains accurate surveillance data on reportable diseases and other important public health issues
  • Provides testing and prophylaxis for Hepatitis (types A, B, & C), Meningitis, Encephalitis, E. coli., invasive streptococcal (strep) infections, and others
  • Serves as liaison with the federal/state health departments and the local health community
  • Serves as a resource and consultant to health organizations, providers, and educational institutions
  • Mobilizes local, state, and federal resources, when necessary, to meet the health needs of individuals and high-risk groups while protecting the health of the community Services and Programs of Epidemiology and Health Information

Communicable Diseases

Communicable Disease Prevention is to prevent and control communicable diseases and maintain accurate morbidity data of reportable diseases. This site includes:

HIV/AIDS Surveillance

The Tarrant County Health Department HIV/AIDS Surveillance promotes the ongoing systematic collection analysis, evaluation and dissemination of data describing important health events of HIV and HIV related illness. This site includes:

  • Confidential HIV/AIDS reporting forms (for Adult and Pediatric cases) 
  • AIDS Perspectives newsletter

Health Threat Investigations

The Health Response Teams coordinates response to bioterrorism and other public health threats within the county. It provides emergency preparedness training for county organizations and residents and ensure the community’s safety against any health threats.

Health Alert Network

The Tarrant County Health Alert Network (HAN) is a special networked computer system that enables approximately 64 local public health departments, 200 hospitals and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to connect statewide, secure intranet and to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The network allows for rapid distribution of health alerts, dissemination of prevention guidelines, distance learning, national disease surveillance and many other functions vital to safeguarding the community against health issues.

Health Intelligence Center

The Health Intelligence Center (HIC) coordinates the consistent analysis and dissemination of health related data in a user-friendly format. This site includes:

Tarrant County Health Monitoring and Assessment Project (M.A.P.) is to establish a community health profile as a baseline for accurate, periodic assessment of our community's progress towards health-related objectives.
