{Paint can and brush} The Tarrant County Public Health Department’s Environmental Health Division performs environmental lead assessments, or home lead investigations, for possible lead sources at the homes of children who have blood lead levels exceeding those established by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Home assessments are scheduled for all children who have laboratory reports identifying blood lead levels greater than 20 ug/dl. Our primary goal is to reduce the harmful impact of childhood lead poisoning while improving quality of the life for Tarrant County children. The environmental investigations include an on-site inspection of residence, interviews with family members, nutritional counseling, overview of abatement options, avoidance recommendations and X-ray Florescence (XRF) testing of possible lead sources such as paint soil, toys, food products, and hobby materials. The division also notifies the child's primary care physician and the homeowner or occupants if significant sources of lead are found during the home assessment.
